Fall Reading List Focusing on Change

Autumn is my favorite season. Surprising because I grew up and have lived most of my life in the tropics, where the season is either summer or rainy.

The air is cool but not frigid, the days are sunny but not hot, and the colors are vibrant but not green. All these marks a shift. It’s funny how apt the changing season is marching simultaneously with my life in transition and the books I’m reading (Disclaimer: I’m not done reading them and rotate them depending on which part of the house I left them).

Build For Tomorrow by Jason Feifer

Reason for reading: I’ve followed Jason through his editor’s notes on Entrepreneur and have always enjoyed his wit and propensity to pepper his articles with useful trivia. His conversations with influential businesspeople are insightful – conversations I enjoy eavesdropping on. So, when he announced his book, which is focused on embracing change, adapting fast, and futureproofing one’s career, I pre-ordered a copy.

Favorite line (so far): We are not what we do. We are why we do it.

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

Reason for reading: This book is a recommendation from a coach helping me work through the metamorphosis I am embarking on. Gay poses essential questions, which I reflect on with undiscovered attentiveness. Here’s where I’m at.

Favorite line (so far): Am I willing to feel good and have my life go well all the time?

How Women Rise by Sally Helgesen and Marshall Goldsmith

Reason for reading: I advocate for having more women in leadership. I feel I’m reaching a breakthrough, but I’m unsure how. Coincidentally, I spoke about this dilemma with a female colleague, who suggested that this book might help. Sally and Marshall bring together perspectives that impact everyone but hone in on specific roadblocks affecting women.

Favorite line (so far): To get unstuck, to let go of a behavior that is no longer serving you, you need first of all to recognize it as a habit. You need to bring it to conscious awareness so you can begin to try out new responses and see if these get you different results.
